Chapter Eleven
Hailee
“You really didn’t have to carry my things.” I place my bag on the hook by the door, turning to grab my art supplies from her arms.
“You’re not very good at accepting help, are you?” she teases. “It’s really no problem.”
“Well, thank you.” She looks at me with a raised brow and I realise I’m being rude. I should ask her in. Stepping back, I wave a hand and usher her inside. “Uh, would you like to come in?”
“Is the sky blue?” She grins and moves past me into the cosy area I like to call my foyer, but really, it’s just a glorified cloakroom about the size of a small latrine. I’d tried to spruce it up by collecting gnarled pieces of willow and adding them to a tall purple vase with realistic looking flowers which I sat by the door, and a wicker chair painted white in the corner. It’s no Ritz Hotel, but it’s homely, and that’s what I was going for.
“Can I get you something to drink?” I skirt around her, making my way through to the kitchenette. “I’ve got all sorts of flavoured teas, or coffee if you’d prefer.”
“Coffee would be great, thanks.”
I place the kettle on the stove, turning to lean my back against the counter, my arms clasped in front of me. I take a moment to watch her as she walks around my home, her fingers trailing over some of my artworks on the wall.
“Did you do these?” she asks, her voice soft and curious as she points to the stack of canvases in the corner.
“Um, yeah.” I duck my head, finding a loose thread on my top to toy with. The paintings on these walls are for everyone to see, but those ones... they’re personal. They represent a time when I was broken. Not even my closest friend has seen these ones. It never occurred to me to put them away; I don’t have a lot of visitors, preferring to keep to myself after Lila ran out on me. In fact, it was her leaving that spurred me to paint them. I put all my anger and hurt into my art. They’re nothing compared to the greats, but to me, they’re beautiful.
“They’re… stunning,” she breaths, a hint of awe in her voice as she flicks through them, and I can’t help but peek up at her. “I mean, I don’t know much about art, but these… they make me feel, ya know?” She rests her hand across her heart, tilting her head to see them from another angle.
“Thanks. I… um… thanks.”
A small chuckle rumbles through her as she turns to meet my gaze. “Not good at taking compliments either, are you?”
“I,” I shake my head, giggling with her. “No, I guess not.”
She moves to stand in front of me, close enough I can smell the musky scent of her perfume. “Would you paint me?”
“I don’t know… I’m still learning, that’s what the class is for.” I wave my hand towards the paintings on the wall.
